about
This song was written in the heart of a storm, on a wind-lashed night in autumn. The first storms and the new darkness following summer are a reminder of the potent forces of Nature, and so autumn feels to me like a time to tell stories and create. I was feeling the power of the elements, but also aware how our creative powers ebb and flow, how sometimes I can feel that I am wise, and other times I can feel that I know nothing. Perhaps the mystics would have us believe they are one and the same thing, this sense of knowing or the sense of simply being. The wonder of the world can be revealed to us in the most mysterious ways.
I recorded The Fever a few times before this studio version that made its way onto the album. One of the early recordings was made in the Chapter Room of the Monastery of Tibães. The walls are covered with paintings of distinguished monks and the room itself is very light and airy and quite beautiful. It was high summer, and hot, so the doors that line the external wall were wide open. I could taste the honeysuckle in the air. As I was singing the opening lines I was joined in the room by a pair of swallows and they stayed there, wildly circling the room until the end of the song. Eduardo Brito was there conducting me like it was a wild song from some secret opera. I was in rapture at the beauty of Nature. The swallows seemed to come as a kind of gift, getting straight to the heart of the song, to the mystery the song itself describes.
lyrics
There’s nothing I know, I just overflow
And sing
But sometimes the sound of joy
Feels like everything.
So open your heart
I’m coming inside
I’m gonna break down these walls
There’s nowhere for you to hide
Midnight
And my mind is beginning to sing
My hearts running dry
I’m giving you everything
Well I’ve got the fever
The fever is burning in me
The fever is burning in me
Well I’ve got the fever
Burning
In me.
You’ve been too long singing that song
Of loneliness and loss
So take your place
In the light of the moon
And call….
We’ll harness the wind with a face to the rain
Pray to the stars and the forces of change
Watch the world come alive
It lights you inside and out…
Midnight
And my mind is beginning to sing
My hearts running dry
I’m giving you everything
Well I’ve got the fever
The fever is burning in me
The fever is burning in me
Well I’ve got the fever
Burning…In me
Oh Lord don’t you leave me now,
I’m feeling so free...
