about
I always had the dream of living in an attic flat. It held some kind of Romantic image of the artist’s life for me so when we decided to move to Manchester to embark on the great Rock and Roll dream, as soon as we found this flat in Moorland Court in Didsbury, we knew it was the place to be. We had a lot of wild parties there, the kind where people wake up in the morning under tables fully clothed.
Sleepwalker was formed from the debris of my first band in Manchester, a fast burning techno rock fuse called The Hum of Good Machines. While the other Manchester bands were absorbed by the sound of Oasis or Radiohead, we were trying to forge our own path using Jane’s Addiction, Leonard Cohen, Patti Smith and early techno as a springboard. It seemed possible and the live shows were a blast of very intense, wild and free energy. It was only when that energy imploded the band that Tom Wilcox and I would re-focus our energies on song-craft, and a chance meeting with bass player Paul Corlett in the lobby of Moorland Court would lead to the rehearsals that formed Sleepwalker, with Paul Corlett’s school friend Tim Smith on drums. We had a lot of great times, and lived it with the passion that a great band needs. I don’t know if we achieved greatness, to be honest, but it was the real thing. We lived for the music.
When I left Manchester at the end of 2000 to live in Braga, in one of my first interviews, a journalist asked me what it felt like to move from one of the best cities in the world for making music to one of the worst. Hmm. Put like that it didn’t feel too good. But I persisted because I found a lot of value in other aspects of life here, and I had the feeling that, even if I was placing myself in a kind of wilderness, that choosing such a different path would eventually bear some fruit. I think it did. In fact I think it’s just starting, and we are in for a big harvest. Get your baskets ready.
lyrics
Sometimes we forget that the energy of the Universe
Is flowing through us all.
We all need to spend a bit of time in the wilderness
But there’s no point in going there if you stop trying to do your best.
And what did we find when we followed that dream,
In an attic flat on the Manchester scene?
And what did we find at the top of the stairs -
There’s a dream that we lost we forgot it was there.
And what did we find in the clubs and the bars
Besides spinning dervishes dancing like stars?
And what did we find my beautiful girl
When we gave it all up for the sun?
Hmm, Hmm, Hmm, My beautiful one
Hmm, Hmm, My beautiful one
Hmm, Hmm, Hmm, My beautiful one
Hmm, Hmm, Wilderness gone…
Our hearts came alive to a mystical tune
Where dreams can be read in the light of the moon
But all that we found was the sound of ourselves
Getting lost in the perfect song:
Wilderness Gone.
Crazy to give up and crazy to try
Together we’ll sing as we reach for the sky
I’m crazy to give up and crazy to try
Together we’ll sing as we reach for the sky
I’m crazy
I’m crazy
Lord won’t you show me...
Oh Lord won’t you show me...the way.
Life is made of tests and trials.
Even when it feels like you’ve lost it all,
Don’t turn your back on your dreams.
