When I had just finished my exams at Lancaster University I walked with 2 great friends, Carl Rushworth and Brendan O’Donnell, from the source of the River Lune to where it meets the sea in Morecambe. We followed the river closely for about 20km per day, tracing its growth from a tiny little hole in a mountainside to where it makes a gaping entrance to the sea. We were walking for 7 days and 7 nights, with a rucksack and a tent. It was such an amazing and beautiful experience, to talk with the farmers tending the land, to fall asleep in daylight beneath the trees, joking about the circling buzzards...and there are few things that make you feel as free as drifting off to sleep, in conversation with those you love, beneath a starlit sky.
