There are few things that lifted my heart more as a boy than arriving home in early Spring from school, and catching sight of the tips of the first snowdrops in the garden. It was a sign of the end of our long dark Scottish winter and the coming sun. Just like the snowdrop and the blackbird’s song, the Cherry Blossom is another great herald of Spring. The Japanese have a special relationship with blossom trees because the flower on the blossom is such a fleeting thing. It’s a beauty that’s brief and passes so quickly, just a quick flash in the cycle of a year. We need to grasp its beauty just as we need to grasp the moments of laughter and joy in the cycle of the days, weeks and months of our lives.
